Reflections on Blogging and Friends

While I shared this on Facebook, I didn't write a blog post about it. However, I did write my Sunday column about it, so here it is.
How many of you blog? I was asked the other day how many people here in Mineral Wells blog, and I really didn’t know the answer to that.
Do you know what a blog is? I hazard to guess that most of you know, but just in case I will quote Wikipedia on the subject:
“A blog (a truncation of the expression web log) is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). Until 2009 blogs were usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often covered a single subject. More recently "multi-author blogs" (MABs) have developed, with posts written by large numbers of authors and professionally edited. MABs from newspapers, other media outlets, universities, think tanks, advocacy groups and similar institutions account for an increasing quantity of blog traffic. The rise of Twitter and other "microblogging" systems helps integrate MABs and single-author blogs into societal newstreams. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.”
I have been on the internet and have used the internet since about 1995 (when it was text-based), but it was ten years before I started my blog, which is titled Sue Looks into the Wood and can be found at http://siouxsue.blogspot.com/.
When I began blogging, I looked at lots of other blogs, and those bloggers looked at and read my blog, as well, and since those I continued to read were interested in the same things I was interested in, some of us became fast friends - although we had never met.
Over the years, as we have traveled we have met some of those friends. We met Violette and Nici, artists in Vancouver, Canada, and we also met Bonny and Rob from Vancouver Island.
However, as I began to write more and more for print publication, I somewhat ignored my blog, but I kept track socially with many of my blogging friends through Facebook and the occasional blog.
My friend Annie Jefferies, whom I met in that first year of blogging, and her husband Don, let us know last fall that they would be traveling from northern California to Missouri on a mission trip this winter, and, fortunately for us, they decided to swing through Texas on their way. What a treat!
As they are both interested in history, we were able to take them on a special guided tour of the Old Jail Museum complex in Palo Pinto. We also went up to Fort Richardson in Jacksboro. Then we were able to show them around Mineral Wells, stopping at the Famous Water Company, and taking photos of many of our old homes, churches, and businesses, including both the Crazy Water and Baker Hotels.
Now they have landed in Missouri and are beginning their mission through the Catholic Church there.
We were very proud that they were able to visit with us and see this remarkable part of the United States, and we pray God’s blessings on them as they assist in serving the people of southern Missouri.
